I just discovered Diana Wynne Jones has passed away. She’s one of those writers. The ones who deserve to be mentioned along side Bradbury, Asimov, Heinlein and the rest. She wrote for all ages of people, and possibly for all ages of time.No aspect of her writing was anything other than spot on. Her family relationships, other relationships, character descriptions could all be how to guides of multiple volumes. The world building was exquisite, deft and subtle, it was like slipping into a bathtub that was just the right temperature. Language use never failed to fit the character, situation or world.
Simply a staggering loss to the written word.
If you haven’t read anything by her, pick something, anything. My favorite is Deep Secret. But The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land should be considered an essential for anyone who writes.
